How Reco-Vie Works
Cold War
The Ozone Depleting Regulations of January 2001 placed a duty on the public and private sectors to collect and recycle all used refrigeration equipment. Within months, fridges were being stored all over the UK – much to the chagrin of the Local Authorities.
As conventional waste companies considered how to dispose of the equipment, Reco-Vie’s founders, Mark Hadley, Carl Oliver and Nick Catling, sought a sustainable solution in recycling.
Gaining Intelligence
By forging links with recyclers in Europe, the team quickly learnt that sophisticated recycling solutions were being developed in a number of countries, not just for fridges and freezers, but for a whole range of Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE).
WEEE Complications
What’s more, as the WEEE Directive comes into force, the manufacturers of electrical and electronic equipment will be largely responsible for the costs of recycling their goods. This is a significant cost they have not had to bear previously, and these manufacturers will not want the additional expense and constraints of negotiating a separate recycling agreement in each of the 25 EU Member States. Therefore, larger businesses will seek pan-European solutions to their recycling requirements.
Making Sense of it All
Electro-recyclers need to face a highly complex emerging market to process waste efficiently. The Reco-Vie team realised that a stand-alone recycler was not the answer – what was needed was a recyclers’ platform, linking to recyclers throughout the UK. Not only did this make use of existing expertise and technologies, but it made logistical commonsense for manufacturers.
A Smart Solution
Reco-Vie directs waste through a strong web of specialist recyclers across the United Kingdom. For those specialist categories of WEEE that cannot be recycled in the UK as yet, specialised export and recovery are directed to the EU.
Reco-Vie(Recycling) Limited has taken on board a first class team of staff, all from the WEEE recycling sector, with experience of UK and European recycling operations. They understand and have hands-on experience of running WEEE recycling plants themselves, as well as a high profile throughout the EU electro-recycling industry.
Staying Ahead
Not only does Reco-Vie make efficient use of systems already in place, but it evaluates technological developments; identifying the new technologies that are likely to be more sustainable and efficient. Innovators discuss with Reco-Vie creative ways in which these improved technologies can be brought into the UK market.
Non-WEEE Developments
Reco-Vie has interests outside the electro-recycling sector, and is currently developing a new recycling market for certain types of plastics, new solar powered compacting equipment from the USA, as well as revolutionary tyre recycling technology that has been successfully trialled in Japan, with obvious benefits for the UK.
